February 2014 Meeting: Damascus Ladder

  • by

DamascusLadder 2Meeting announcements: Our February guild meeting will be on Saturday, February 15, one week later than normal. We’re doing inchies this month, and there is no set theme – so anything goes!

Update: Tom reminded me to mention the invitation from the Mustang Library to include some of our items in their display case celebrating National Craft Month. The items will be on display throughout the month of March, and Angela has generously volunteered to take the items to the library. If you want to participate, please bring your items to this month’s guild meeting, bring them to the library, or contact Angela.

Tom Gibson will be teaching us how to make a Damascus Ladder cane:

Materials:

  • Choose four to seven colors of cane worthy clay the color selection can be anything that appeals to you, but make sure there is good contrast between adjacent layers. Metallic or pearl clays can produce extremely good effects.
  • Bring 1/2 to 3/4 block EACH COLOR of conditioned clay. You will need enough to have 7 or 8 strips 1″ x 6″ at the #1 (thickest) setting on the Atlas Pasta machine or 2 layers at the #3 setting. You will probably use more of the lighter color strips than contrasting darker colors.

Optional inclusions:

  • Gold leaf
  • Mica powder
  • Glitter

Tools:

  • Tissue blade (the stiffer ones work best for this cane)
  • Brayer or roller
  • Work surface
  • It is also helpful to have a piece of Lucite or other flat surface to provide an even distribution of pressure while rolling the stack of clay.

NOTE: Construction is still likely on May Avenue next to the fairgrounds. Enter through Gate 5 further south on May, across from Forest Lumber. See this map for reference.

January 2014 Meeting: Cardiogram/Razor Wire Technique

  • by

cardiogramThis is raffle month and those bringing items are: Karen, Tom, Cindy, Connie, and Penni Jo.

Angel is our instructor this month, and she will teach a cane technique created by Pavlina, a lady she met via Facebook.

After seeing some of her polymer clay pieces, she asked Pavlina for permission to teach the cardiogram/razor wire technique at our guild meeting. Pavlina was excited to be asked and gave her permission!

She went on to tell Angel that she was new to polymer clay, and that she belonged to a guild in Bulgaria. Her only request was to post pictures of some of our color combinations.

Clay

  • 1 block light color
  • 1 block dark color
  • 1 block metallic color

Tools

  • Pasta machine
  • Work surface
  • Slicing blade or other slicing tool
  • Acrylic rod

Optional

  • Molds or shape cutters

Our meeting will be held January 11th from 1:30 to 4:30 at the Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center at the State Fair Park (3000 General Pershing Blvd.).

NOTE: There is ongoing construction on May Avenue next to the fairgrounds. Gate 3 (the one nearest to the arts center) is completely closed until at least January 2014. Use Gate 5 further to the south, across from Forest Lumber. See this map for reference.

December 2013 Meeting: Show & Tell + Fun!

  • by
mermaidOur meeting will be held December 14th from 1:30 to 4:30 at the Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center at the State Fair Park (3000 General Pershing Blvd.).
In December, we don’t have a traditional lesson. Instead, we’ll have show & tell, where you bring something you made (perhaps inspired by one of our lessons this year) and explain how you made it. There will also be an optional “Dirty Santa” game, where you can swap your show & tell item and end up with another person’s creation. You don’t have to participate in the game if you want to keep your own item, though!
IMPORTANT: We will also be voting on one of the classes Christi Friesen will be teaching at the retreat. One of the classes will be an articulated mermaid (shown here), but we have LOTS of choices available for the second class! Penni Jo just posted the possible classes on the Yahoo group. For your convenience, they are also listed below:
They all look like they would be fun, don’t they? Please look them over this week and think about your favorites. We’ll probably have more than one round of voting to narrow the choices, since there are so many.
It was suggested we bring a goody to the meeting (cookies, chips, etc.) – not mandatory.
Hope to see you on the 14th!

NOTE: There is ongoing construction on May Avenue next to the fairgrounds. Gate 3 (the one nearest to the arts center) is completely closed until at least January 2014. Use Gate 5 further to the south, across from Forest Lumber. See this map for reference.

July 2013 Meeting: Faux Mother-of-Pearl Inlay

  • by

Myra will be teaching this month…

Supply list:

— Pre-baked black clay pendant with a deeply impressed texture, in whatever shape you wish.

— 1/2 block Premo pearl clay

— 1/4 block Premo translucent clay

Condition and thoroughly mix these two colors together before the meeting, to save time. You can adjust the mix according to your preference – increasing the proportion of pearl clay makes it more shiny, adding more translucent may make it look more natural.

— Mica powders (I have plenty of these colors to share):

  • Blue
  • Pink
  • Pearl white

— Small-to-medium size paint brush or sponge-tip make-up applicators

— Sandpaper or sanding sponges (I will bring some):

  • Coarse (for removing excess material after baking)
  • Medium, fine, & extra-fine (for polishing)

— Small bowl or dish for water

Tools:

— Pasta machine

— Blade

— Acrylic roller or brayer

The meeting will be held at the Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center at the State Fair Park (3000 General Pershing Blvd.) on July 13th from 1:30 to 4:30.
