Meeting for September 12, 2020: Anemone Jewelry

  • by

Our September meeting will be held at the home of Betty Bolerjack, 6712 Randi Rd, Oklahoma City on 09/12/2020 at 1:30 pm. Park on either Randi Rd or 67th St and come in either the front door or the back. You are welcome to join us on Zoom if you are unable to be with us in person. Zoom details will be available on our private Facebook group and will also be sent out via email. Please contact Betty for more info if you wish to attend as a guest via Zoom.

This month, Betty will be teaching us how to make simple, but fun Anemone jewelry. We will create the flowers, bake them, then put the jewelry (necklace, earrings, bracelet) together. If you have never tried polymer clay and would like to see if it’s something you would enjoy, this is the class for you! Very few tools are needed and some of those can be found around the house. This class is designed so that you can gather your supplies and take them to your computer so those joining us via Zoom can also create along with us.

Please have your clay conditioned and any custom colors you wish to use mixed ahead of time. Sheet your clay on #3 (medium) setting on your pasta machine. If you are rolling it out by hand, it should be approximately 5 playing cards thick.

Supplies

(Please note that if you are new and wanting to just dip your toes in, Betty has many of these items that can be borrowed if you are with us in person)

Clay:

Approximately ½ pkg (1 oz.) each of 3 colors. You can also make the flowers in just one color for which 1 block (2 oz.) would be plenty. If using a single color, you will need a small amount of a contrasting color clay for the centers.

Findings and other items:

6mm jump rings in a finish to coordinate with your chosen clay color(s)

Clasps of your choice

1 pair earwires

Swarovski Hot Fix or other flat back glass crystals, sizes 12ss, 20ss, and 30ss (optional). If you prefer, clay beads can be made for the flower centers.

Extra-Fine Glitter (coordinate with your clay colors)

PearlEx or other mica powder (coordinate with your clay colors)

Sculpey Gloss Glaze, Varathane, or other finish of your choice

Tools:

Work surface

Baking tile

Pasta machine or clay roller with playing cards (do not need to bring if your clay is prepared ahead of time)

Clay blades

Graduated round cutters ( ½” or ¾”, 1”, 1 ¼”, 1 ½“, 2”)

Something to create texture – a piece of lace, a favorite texture sheet, a ball of aluminum foil, low grit sandpaper or stair tread, etc.

Stiff brush – could be an old toothbrush – stiffer is better

Needle tool or toothpicks

Small paintbrushes to apply glaze and mica powder

Needle nose pliers to open and close jump rings

Any other favorite tools you might want to use

Meeting for June 2020: Deb Hart Demo

  • by

The Central Oklahoma Polymer Clay Guild will have its regular monthly meeting on Saturday, June 13, 2020, via Zoom. The meeting will begin at 1:30 pm CT. Since we are meeting via Zoom again, we will not be doing any hands-on work. Instead, Deb Hart has graciously offered to do a demo for us on Making Tube Beads.

We will be having Show and Tell, too, so be ready to show us what you have been working on! If you are a member, you will be receiving an email with information to access the meeting a day or two before. If you are not a member and would like to join us, we invite you to do so. You may contact Betty Bolerjack here for the access information.

Meeting for May 2020: Transforming Canes

  • by

It’s almost time for our May meeting! It’s coming up Saturday, May 9 at 1:30 pm CDT. But wait… can we meet in person? Do we have to cancel? Will anyone even come? Here’s the good news! Even though meeting in person is not advisable yet due to so many of our number being in the high-risk category for the virus, we CAN meet virtually. We had so much fun with our Mini Virtual Retreat that we have decided to have our May meeting on Zoom. And our special guest this month is Debbie Jackson! How cool is that?

Debbie’s topic is Transforming Canes. She is going to show us “how to create a collection of patterns from basic Bullseye Canes and learn a variety of ways they can be used in projects.” I have a feeling Debbie’s going to have some amazing ideas that we haven’t seen before. The photos above are a sampling of things to be made with these techniques.

The supply list is simple and will be posted here early next week. You can just watch or you can clay along with us! One thing you will need is some Bullseye Canes. If you are new to polymer clay and want to know how to make them, here is a YouTube video you can watch. More details will be posted soon.

We will be using Zoom Cloud Meetings again. If you don’t have the app, be sure to download it to your computer or mobile device before the 9th.  (Scroll down for mobile apps.) If you can set up a laptop or your mobile in your workspace so that you can clay with us as Debbie shows us what to do, that will be awesome! Otherwise, you can just watch and try the techniques later. To avoid “Zoombombing,” I will be emailing the meeting ID and password to members and others who wish to attend. Please use the contact form to get in touch with me if you are not a member but would like to attend this virtual meeting.

See you soon!

Meeting for March 2020: Rose Pendant

This month, our meeting will be on Saturday, March 14, 2020, from 1:30-4:30 and will once again be held at Betty Bolerjack’s home: 6712 Randi Rd, Oklahoma City

Betty will be teaching us how to make roses and will demonstrate several methods to create a rose. She will take us step-by-step through creating this beautiful rose pendant as our project. You will have the opportunity to make a slightly different pendant if you prefer. As an alternative, you can bring a box or a container such as the ones we made last month to which you can attach your roses.Rose Pendant

Your clay can be any color you choose for your rose. You will have the opportunity to practice making several roses.  You’ll get a more realistic look if you mix your rose color equally with translucent. You can also use a skinner blend or light, medium, and dark shades. Please have your clay conditioned and colors mixed ahead of time to save time in class. Any color can be used for the bezel and leaves. 18K gold was used for both in the sample.

The edges of the rose petals can be colored using mica powder such as PearlEx or chalk pastels. A darker color, contrasting color or metallic add more interest. Mica can also be used to make the bezel look more like metal.  Some suggestions to get a metallic look: PearlEx Brilliant Gold on 18K Gold clay, Aztec Gold on Gold clay, and Macropearl on Silver clay.

Supplies

Clay – color of your choice for rose, bezel, and leaves.

Mica powder or chalk pastels (optional)

TLS or Clear Liquid Sculpey

5” 20 ga wire for bail or purchased bail (can also make out of clay)

Sculpey Bezel Mold or purchased bezel

Small box for carrying your project home if unable to finish during class (finished pendant is approximately 2 1/2″)

Large ball tool from Sculpey Style and Detail Tools or similar

Small ball tool, needle tool or toothpick

¾” circle cutter

Bail making pliers or ¼” dowel rod

Needle nose Pliers

Wire Cutters

Pasta Machine
