Laugh & Learn with Christi Friesen

Christi Friesen Stained Glass Make and Take ProjectInternationally-known polymer clay artist, teacher and author Christi Friesen will teach two classes and clay along with us.

All retreat attendees will get to take part in a Spectacular Stained Glass Make & Take with Christi. Inspired by Tiffany’s stained glass pieces, this polymer version is simple and stunning. Learn to make a translucent swirled clay blend, and add a surface treatment to simulate a glass look. We are tentatively scheduling one Make & Take session for Thursday evening, and one for Friday morning.

In addition, Christi is offering two optional half-day classes:

Class 1: Marvelous Moth ($50)

Friday, April 20, 4-7 p.m.

Luna MothThis dramatic moth is wonderfully fun to create! In this workshop you will play with color mixing and design, as well as sculptural techniques including using wire armatures and surface treatments.

As with all of Christi’s classes, individuality and creativity are stressed – no two moths will look alike!

All skill levels are welcome.

ALL supplies and tools will be provided, and you will finish your project!

Sign up for Class 1 here.

Class 2: Phabulous Phoenix ($50)

Saturday, April 21, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Steampunk PheonixThe pheonix is a wonderful symbol of rebirth, rejuvenation, overcoming hardships… and it’s also delightfully fun to make! Join in the fun and learn sculpting techniques, design and composition skills and accent/embellishment tricks. This bird is in the steampunk style that is so popular now, but your bird doesn’t have to be steampunked – you can use beads, pearls, or crystals to decorate you fine feathered friend!

As with all of Christi’s classes, individuality and creativity are stressed – no two birds will look alike!

All skill levels are welcome.

ALL supplies and tools will be provided, and you will finish your project!

Sign up for Class 2 here.

Sign up for one, both, or neither of the classes (class fees are in addition to retreat registration fee). If you choose to take both half-day classes, you’ll get a $10 discount (total of $90). Sign up for the 2-class “special dealio” here.

Watch Demos by Retreat Attendees

Throughout the retreat, we’ll have short demos by various presenters, including Polymer Clay 101 author and CraftyGoat.com blogger Angela Mabray, and sculptor, instructor, and designer of Best Flexible Molds Penni Jo Couch.

Get Goodies

Our goody bags are full of free supplies and samples, generously donated by some of our favorite companies. We’ll be giving away several door prizes every day. Plus we’re holding a Silent Auction Saturday after lunch, where larger prizes will be up for grabs. Take a look at these great sponsors:

We also want to say a special “thank you” to our local guild members and friends of the guild for their auction donations:

Sell Your Stuff & Stock up on Supplies

All attendees are invited to sell work from their workspace, as long as their displays are no higher than 18” from the tabletop. Separate vendor tables will also be available for sellers who need more room. (See our vendor info page for details.) Come prepared to shop for fun new polymer clay goodies!

Silent Auction

Saturday afternoon’s silent auction will put your speed and determination to the test! You’ll have just 20 minutes to place your bids on 35+ great items, including supplies from our sponsors, polymer clay artwork from fellow retreat attendees, and even two toaster ovens that were bought just for the retreat. Each item will have a sheet of paper where you’ll write your bid. But watch out, lest the competition sneak up and outbid you!

Travel Info

We’ve set up a separate travel info page for those of you coming in from out-of-town.

What to Bring

All tools & supplies will be provided for Christi Friesen’s classes. Aside from that, the retreat is mostly just “clay play,” where you work on whatever you like. Here are some things you may want to add to your packing list:

  • Work surface (tile, glass, etc.). Required, as the tables won’t be clay-friendly.
  • Your favorite clay tools & supplies
  • Polymer clay “inchies” if you want to participate in the swap (more info below)
  • Snacks & drinks to keep up your creative energy
  • Your polymer clay items if you want to sell from your table
  • Cash and/or credit card to buy other folks’ goodies and bid on auction prizes
  • Optional: personal lamp, power strip if you have a lot of accessories, pasta machine motor (we do allow motors, but please be considerate of your neighbors)

Of course, you don’t need to worry too much if you forget something. Your neighbor will probably be more than happy to share… or Hobby Lobby’s just a few miles away!

Inchies Swap

We’ll be hosting a polymer clay “inchie” swap at this year’s retreat. Inchies are small pieces of art that measure just 1″ by 1″. You may make as many inchies as you choose — the more you make, the more you get back! Participation is completely optional, but it might be a fun project to work on while you’re at the retreat. Swap items must be turned in by 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning. The inchies will be sorted and
distributed to swap participants Saturday afternoon.

Need some ideas for your inchies?

  • Inchies can be imprinted, sculpted, collaged, or otherwise decorated.
  • You can use any type of embellishments in your designs but try to
keep the thickness below 1/2 inch.
  • Our retreat’s “Safari” theme might inspire some exotic design ideas.
  • Don’t forget to sign the back!
